Dr Helen Snaith is a Senior Data Scientist at the British Oceanographic Data Centre, within the UK National Oceanography Centre (NOC), with primary responsibility for high-volume data management strategy and delivery of external contracts. She also has a remit for development of new products and services in support of oceanographic research.

She has worked within the NOC and its precursor institutes since 1991 and has more than 25 years’ experience in the realm of remote sensing oceanography, specialising in satellite altimetry.

As well as managing a number of projects with the BODC, Helen is also a participant in a number of remote sensing projects including validation of ocean products from the Cryosat 2 and Sentinel 3 altimeter missions, and developing cloud solutions for processing of satellite altimeter data.

Helen graduated from Durham University in 1987, with an honours degree in Geology. In 1988 she achieved a Master degree in Oceanography from Southampton University, where she went on to receive a PhD in Physical Oceanography in 1993, with a thesis entitled ‘A Study of Currents in the Southern Ocean Using Satellite Altimeter and Model Data’.
