Dr. Boris Dorschel is a senior scientist at the Alfred Wegener Institute, Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research (AWI) in Bremerhaven, Germany. He joined AWI in 2012 as head of the bathymetry working group in the geophysics department.
From 2004 to 2012, Boris worked as a postdoctoral researcher in collaborative projects at University College Cork, Ireland. There, he investigated the influence of environmental factors on cold-water coral carbonate mound development. Since 2012, the focus of his research has been on geo-morphology of the seafloor in high latitudes with special emphasis on the reconstruction of ice sheet histories and habitat mapping. As part of his activities, he collects multibeam echosounder data from the Arctic and around Antarctica.
He graduated in geology/palaeontology at the University of Bremen in 1999 and completed his PhD thesis on cold-water coral carbonate mounds at the Center for Marine Environmental Sciences (MARUM) in Bremen. Further pursuing cold-water coral carbonate research, he then took up a first postdoctoral appointment at MARUM.
